The permanent host of the works of R.J. Stefanski, an experimental dark ambient musician from Detroit, MI. Self released nearly 20 continuous mix tapes featuring the best of both contemporary and classic experimental music, with a focus on ambient and indie electronic genres. I also am an avid field recorder, and you can hear my tapes of rain, trains, and all sorts of found sounds in my mixes. Enjoy and I love hearing feedback! All my works are streaming on soundcloud and some for purchase on bandcamp.

Also, a word on my mixes: only brief samples of songs are used, always being tweaked or adjusted in some way by myself, and always presented in ONE long, continuous track. I am NOT giving away anyone’s music, if you enjoy the sample of an artist in one of my mixes, I urge you to go out and buy the album on vinyl and support the artist. That is the whole reason I am making these!

Last Glowing Embers (full free WAV download + artwork)

image

After months of editing and preparation: Last Glowing Embers, the new musical project from R.J. Stefanski is here. Unlike recent mixes and original works, this will only be available right here on tumblr as a free mediafire zip file before streaming on sites like soundcloud. Included in the file is a large WAV file of the audio project, high quality artwork from behind the scenes, and a text document with full tracklisting and info. Outside of this free download I am going to keep the info on the project limited, instead wanting people to have to dive in with no previous notions or a tracklisting, waveform, etc.. to give you clues. I will say that even though I worked hard for this to sound completely different from my older works, it should appeal to fans of my previous ambient soundscapes or field recordings, picking up where a mix like “Mini Anthology of Ambient” left off. Click on the title below to be directed to mediafire for your free download. Look forward to hearing your feedback, always interested to see where or how you listen!

Rain Trilogy (free RAR download of 20 mins. of storms in high quality WAV)

Available for the first time as a free download, “Rain Trilogy” collects all of my previously released field recordings in one soothing 20 minute package. Each track is not just a single recording played as it happened, but actually a collage of several different recordings layered on top of each other for a fuller sound. All three were also recorded in different locations and seasons, each having a distinctive vibe (“Relaxing Rain…” closes with a repeating keyboard line for a dark-tinted new age mood, while “Torrential Downpour…” allows the most human edge with passing cars fading in near the end). All found sounds were taped by myself in 2013 on a Tascam DR-03 linear PCM recorder into 44.1 Khz/WAV files that were then edited in Magix Music Maker 16. Headphones highly recommended, enjoy! Click on title directly below to be directed to Mediafire for free download:

My newest soundscape project:
R.J. Stefanski - “The Haunting of Prospect Street” (pts I-III so far): is a series of sound loops that will total 2 hours of music designed for Halloween. Click on the cover image above to be directed to the set on soundcloud which so far consists of the first 3 loops/55 minutes of the spooky soundtrack, mixing experimental music with actual dialogue from horror movies. Any musical artist that provides a psychedelic and dark mood was considered, so everything from metal (Tool and Deafheaven), classic rock (Pink Floyd), ambient (Eno), and indie (Animal Collective, Black Dice) made the final cut.

PREVIEW: “Drive Away the Dream Parade” (an experimental audio transmission)

CLICK HERE TO PREVIEW “DRIVE AWAY…” ON SOUNDCLOUD.

Commissioned for an upcoming series of experimental mixes, “Drive Away…” represents the newest chapter in my ongoing merging of ambient and non ambient sounds, challenging the notions of what qualifies as “sleep music”. Mixed in with the classic tones of Aphex Twin, Biosphere, and Boards of Canada are a newer crop of artists like Balam Acab, Arms and Sleepers, and a few of my own tracks. This mix also marks the first time I recorded another musician, adding in original viola parts by August Hodge. Also added throughout the mix are bits of dialogue from 2001 A Space Odyssey. The link above takes you to soundcloud where you can stream the opening 23 mins of the project until the series posts the full length version.

Mix 10: Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun (A Soundtrack for Space Travel)

In the not so distant future: You are aboard a state-of-the-art space vessel hurtling off into the unknown realms of the universe. The only member of your crew still alive, you are haunted by voices which seem to echo from every dark corner of the craft. More troubling than those, the ship is under constant bombardment from fragments of sonic and audio data being beamed out into space from other ships and planets, remnants of old radio broadcasts perhaps, constantly unfolding into one another so that each small part melds into an ever changing orb of found sound. Suddenly you seem to have found a glimmer of hope in the far reaches of your telescope, the Sun. Its a race against time to try and reach the nearest civilization before the voices, real or imagined, drive you to insanity. So, light your last candles as you preserve vital power resources, dawn your best headphones, and let the speed-of-light voyage wash over you in a thick, psychedelic haze. (Hopefully the Sun’s image is not yet another one of the universe’s many mirages, looping you into a black hole which will bring you right back to where you began). [Download link in title below, enjoy!]
