After months of editing and preparation: Last Glowing Embers, the new musical project from R.J. Stefanski is here. Unlike recent mixes and original works, this will only be available right here on tumblr as a free mediafire zip file before streaming on sites like soundcloud. Included in the file is a large WAV file of the audio project, high quality artwork from behind the scenes, and a text document with full tracklisting and info. Outside of this free download I am going to keep the info on the project limited, instead wanting people to have to dive in with no previous notions or a tracklisting, waveform, etc.. to give you clues. I will say that even though I worked hard for this to sound completely different from my older works, it should appeal to fans of my previous ambient soundscapes or field recordings, picking up where a mix like “Mini Anthology of Ambient” left off. Click on the title below to be directed to mediafire for your free download. Look forward to hearing your feedback, always interested to see where or how you listen!
The newest chapter in my evolution of creating immersive ambient soundscapes: Last Glowing Embers. A summation of every ambient project I have released thus far, LGE blurs the distinction between mixtape and original release in its relentless layering of brief samples and original field recordings. Stay tuned for official release date and tracklisting information.

Any fans of my mixtapes or my field recordings should find something to enjoy within the 12 tracks and 64 minutes of everything from IDM/ambient techno, to pure new age soundscapes, to indie folk pop. Each track has been designed to flow seamlessly into the next, creating a uniquely immersive listening experience. I would think my album would appeal to fans of my biggest influences, experimental acts like Animal Collective, Stars of the Lid, Gas, Boards of Canada, Pink Floyd or Tool.
Also available for the first time are field recordings “Peach Festival from a Distance” (a soundscape composed of recordings during Romeo, MI’s annual parade and carnival), and “Cedar Pt.” (a 9+ min. recording made on the shores of Lake Erie with roller coasters nearby.

Available for the first time as a free download, “Rain Trilogy” collects all of my previously released field recordings in one soothing 20 minute package. Each track is not just a single recording played as it happened, but actually a collage of several different recordings layered on top of each other for a fuller sound. All three were also recorded in different locations and seasons, each having a distinctive vibe (“Relaxing Rain…” closes with a repeating keyboard line for a dark-tinted new age mood, while “Torrential Downpour…” allows the most human edge with passing cars fading in near the end). All found sounds were taped by myself in 2013 on a Tascam DR-03 linear PCM recorder into 44.1 Khz/WAV files that were then edited in Magix Music Maker 16. Headphones highly recommended, enjoy! As I gear up for 2014, there are a few tracks I have laying around that did not make it onto a release. The first of these, “Peach Festival…” is made entirely of field recordings I took in Romeo, MI during 2012’s annual parade/carnival. You will hear lots of small town ambiance, including relaxing church bells, kids yelling and cheering, and even a marching band warming up. Keep checking back for a new clip of rain and thunder as well!

Coming very soon to tumblr and bandcamp as a free download, “Tidally Locked” is my 3rd official release of original material and consists of two lengthy journeys into a humid, alien-like rainforest of beats, guitar, keyboards and plenty of new field recordings.

My newest soundscape project:
R.J. Stefanski - “The Haunting of Prospect Street” (pts I-III so far): is a series of sound loops that will total 2 hours of music designed for Halloween. Click on the cover image above to be directed to the set on soundcloud which so far consists of the first 3 loops/55 minutes of the spooky soundtrack, mixing experimental music with actual dialogue from horror movies. Any musical artist that provides a psychedelic and dark mood was considered, so everything from metal (Tool and Deafheaven), classic rock (Pink Floyd), ambient (Eno), and indie (Animal Collective, Black Dice) made the final cut.
To any followers in the Detroit/Michigan area: my next upcoming show will be on Oct. 12th at the new North End Studios location on Loraine St. in Detroit. I will be playing the opening and closing sets of “You’re Going to Hell” an anti-Halloween themed variety show featuring everything from improv comedy to fire performances and live music acts ranging from hip-hop to psych rock to ambient soundscapes. It’s sure to be one of the more low-key, fun, and affordable Halloween parties around. Tell us you’re coming on the Facebook page too: https://www.facebook.com/events/734635516554050/736854166332185/?ref=notif¬if_t=plan_mall_activity

Only the most eerie and psychedelic sounds and artists made the cut for “The Haunting of Prospect Street”. Perhaps my most diverse presentation of artists, ranging from Pink Floyd to Tool to Sigur Ros, are layered with sound effects to create a uniquely haunting 20 minute collage. This is only the first of several pieces planned to culminate in my full 2 hour DJ set for this years trick or treaters.

Commissioned for an upcoming series of experimental mixes, “Drive Away…” represents the newest chapter in my ongoing merging of ambient and non ambient sounds, challenging the notions of what qualifies as “sleep music”. Mixed in with the classic tones of Aphex Twin, Biosphere, and Boards of Canada are a newer crop of artists like Balam Acab, Arms and Sleepers, and a few of my own tracks. This mix also marks the first time I recorded another musician, adding in original viola parts by August Hodge. Also added throughout the mix are bits of dialogue from 2001 A Space Odyssey. The link above takes you to soundcloud where you can stream the opening 23 mins of the project until the series posts the full length version.
